BREXIT: FACTS, FIGURES AND IDIOMS

June 23, 2019

You may be very confused by the never ending kerfuffle that is Brexit.

Let me introduce you to some USEFUL  IDIOMS we can use to talk about Brexit.

A LEAP IN THE DARK  -> a daring step or enterprise whose consequences are unpredictable.

OUT OF THE FRYING PAN INTO THE FIRE  -> from a bad situation to one that is worse.

YOU CAN´T HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT  -> you can't have it both ways ; you can't have the best of both worlds.

HOIST WITH ITS OWN PETARD  is a phrase from a speech in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet that has become proverbial. The phrase's meaning is literally that the bomb-maker (a "petard" is a small explosive device) is blown up ("hoisted" off the ground) by his own bomb, and indicates an ironic reversal, or poetic justice.

Figurative language aside, now let's gather SOME FACTS.

The UK was called onto a referendum by ex-Primer Minister David Cameron, in a miscalculated bet to save his leadership of the Tory party.  The man challenging him was ex-mayor of London Boris Johnson. Boris had started galvanizing the eurosceptics against Cameron, hoping to replace him as Prime Minister. David Cameron assumed that he would win the referendum.

It all formally began on 27th of May 2015, when The European Union Referendum Bill was unveiled in the Queen's Speech. This is the UK legislation required to allow the referendum to take place.

There were two campaigns behind the referendum:

The Leave campaign awoke a colossal level of hatred, loathing, rancor, and racism towards not just us, Europeans, but also towards anyone perceived as "not of pure British heritage".

The referendum was held on Thursday 23 June, 2016. Leave won by 51.9% and Remain lost by a small margin getting 48.1% of the votes. The referendum turnout was 71.8%, with more than 30 million people voting. The day after the referendum, David Cameron resigned as Primer Minister.

Here are some videos narrated by Stephen Fry, talking about the deceptive framing of Brexit and the rise of racism in Britain. Projecting a fight against the establishment allowed the Leave campaing to brush research data and expert advice under the carpet.

FACT: Immigrants contributed £20bn to the UK between 2000-2011, paying 64% more in taxes than they received in benefits.

This second video  connects the Trump election with the spread of hate crime in the UK.

FACT:  Today, British newspapers have published a recording proving that Steve Bannon (Trump´s strategist) was in talks with Boris Johnson advising him on his resignation speech.  Bannon has proposed limiting voting rights only to property-owners.  Let that sink in for a moment. Those who can't afford to own a home wouldn't be able to vote.

Back to the video, it reminds us that the austerity policy in Britain has inflicted great misery from political desire, rather than from economic necessity. It also uncovers the true threat to democracy and why a new public vote is the best defence we have.

Britain can't take back control from Europe, because it never lost it. No country has lost sovereignity to Brussels, as some  Brexiteers claim.  But is the endgame to create a tax heaven for the wealthy at the expense of destroying public services ?

Globalists vs Nationalists. Facts, Illusions and Hidden Threats. Is Trump truly a nationalist?

FACT: 47% of US  jobs are at high risk of automation in the next 10 to 20 years. It will not be the Mexicans or the Chinese that will take our jobs, it will be the algorithms.

Each year in the U.S.  48 million people get sick from contaminated food (14.7%), which is 8 times higher than the statistics in the U.K.  Perhaps is because chlorine washed chicken is illegal in Europe and our farming standards are much higher. Trump is pressuring the UK to accept chlorine washed chicken in exchange for a trade deal after Brexit.

MY OWN PERSONAL FEELINGS?

As some Brexiteers celebrate their "Independence Day", I shall treasure the extraordinary 16 years that I lived in London, surrounded by people who represented the best of humankind, from all nationalities, races and social backgrounds, giving their best every day to contribute to the most vibrant city in the world. London is the city where I grew up as a woman,  where I fulfilled my biggest dreams, and nobody can take that away from me.

my ♥ heart is big enough to fit two countries in it

There´s one solution to all this Brexit nonsense, and Paul McCartney has known it for a long time.

And when the broken-hearted people

living in the world agree
there will be an answer, let it be.

For though they may be parted,

there is still a chance that they will see
there will be an answer, let it be.
